May 2023 – The annual Wiley Flower Show in May was canceled for the fourth year due to lingering concerns about the Covid-19 virus, but that didn’t stop GCM members from bringing floral happiness to the residents at Wiley. On a beautiful and breezy May day, GCM members gathered on the porch at the Gibson House to create cheerful flower arrangements for nursing home residents at the Wiley Christian Retirement Community in Marlton. The group created more than 40 arrangements, which was enough for all the residents in the home. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to create the arrangements and bring joy to the Wiley residents.
Each month, a different garden club member delivers a floral arrangement to the Evesham Branch of the Burlington County Library in Marlton to bring a pop of color and a bit of nature to the library. Shown are the library arrangements for July.
JUNE 2023 – The GCM’s 3rd Annual Plant Sale was held at the John Inskeep House, in conjunction with the Marlton Garden tour on June 3rd. It was a resounding success!
“Plant Sale worker bees looking fresh as daisies and happy as hollyhocks at the Inskeep House" was the famous quote of the day from one of our members.
The plant sale more than doubled our 2022 sales! GCM members came through again and donated more than 100 plants. We received generous donations of native plants from Evesham Green Team members plus the donation of trees and tomato plants from Evesham Historical Society President Geoff Smith.
Thanks to everyone who donated plants, worked the Plant Sale, and attended the Marlton Garden Tour. We met many old and new gardeners, ready to choose new plants for their Jersey yards
May 16th - The GCM Weed Warriors were at it again in advance of the Marlton Garden Tour and GCM Plant Sale on June 3. cleaning up the Herb Garden behind the historic John Inskeep House
For our Community Beautification Project, 7 of our garden members gathered to "remove weeds; plant parsley, rosemary, and colorful yellow zinnias; replant daffodils that had grown between the chives and oregano; and plant yellow and orange marigolds along the border wall. It was a great day to be gardening!
April 2023 – The GCM Weed Warriors tackled the spring cleanup of the Herb Garden at the historic John Inskeep House on April 5 – just in time for the Easter Egg Hunt the Evesham Historical Society was holding for disadvantaged children on the day before Easter.
The Weed Warriors removed weeds and the overgrowth from winter in just about an hour, all while enjoying beautiful sunny weather, a sea of flowering daffodils, and the fresh aroma of oregano and mint that was flourishing in the garden at the time.
May 2023 -- The Garden Club of Marlton was named the recipient of one of three $1,000 native tree grants awarded by the Garden Club of New Jersey (GCNJ). The grant was awarded at the GCNJ Annual Meeting on June 6 in Bridgewater, as part of the commitment made by Cecelia Millea in June 2021 when she was elected the 50th president of the Garden Club of New Jersey.
The $1,000 grant money helped purchase South Jersey native trees: ie Sweet Bay Magnolia, American Dogwood, Swamp Maple, and Willow Oak for the recently renovated London Square Park, at 129 Westminster Ave. in Marlton. The neighborhood park has a new basketball court, playground, and walkways.
Thanks to the Evesham Township Department of Recreation and Open Space staff for their patience while our members “helped” plant the trees.
The Department of Recreation and Open Space will plant and maintain the trees as well as provide Treegator® watering devices and deer fencing.
A public dedication ceremony to highlight the importance of native trees will be held later this year. All of the trees selected
were purchased from Axten’s Nurseries and Landscape in Marlton.
In formulating the grant application, The Garden Club of Marlton relied on guidance and advice from the Evesham Environmental Commission (EEC), the Evesham Green Team, and Evesham Township’s Department of Public Works and Department of Recreation and Open Space.
